A Guide to K-drama Kingdom

A Teenager’s guide to Hallyu Land a.k.a K-drama Kingdom

Hey guys, so we all know and love K-pop right? But what about K-dramas?. The Korean culture wave has taken over all the world like a tornado like they should. But some people are left in the dark about K-Dramas?. What about them? Are they as enjoyable as the other aspects of the Korean culture? And most importantly, Are they bingable?. And as a proud fan of K-dramas I say…. YES!!!. Here are some reasons to watch K-dramas.

1. They have literally every genre in the book and it is shot damn good.

2. It has a ton of romance and who doesn’t like a good love story and as a teenage girl it makes my heart flutter and makes me want to see the world in a positive way.

3. They also tackle important issues like weight issues, body positivity and feminism through entertainment.

4. They are perfect for people who like any genre but also want a bit of drama on the side.

Honestly I could go on and on. But without further ado I will be giving 2 recommendations for every genre. Let’s take a dive into Hallyu Land!!. Warning: There is romance in EVERYTHING!!!.

 1. Romance

First Rec: What’s wrong with secretary kim?

First there is an extremely narcissistic executive who does not show compassion and always keeps a hard outer shell. And then there is his secretary who is literally perfect at her job but doesn’t know if that is what she wants. This is so full of twists and turns that I can only tell this much without spoiling it.

Second rec: Crash landing on you

This is praised as a really great story. There is a multi-billionaire who is a very stubborn rebel and comes from a very rich background. She finds herself in North Korea and is found by a very dedicated and strict North Korean soldier and things go down. I must say all the character arcs are really written beautiful.

 2. Comedy

First Rec: Strong Woman Do-bong Soon

This is so hilarious I almost peed myself watching this. There is a superwoman who comes from a family where all women are born with superstrength and the boys are born normal. She tries to keep her identity secret but a gaming company finds out and hires her as his bodyguard as an exchange for a position in his company as she always wanted. Things get a little bit dark when a sick woman kidnapper gets involved. And there is a love triangle too. This show’s literally got everything.

Second Rec: Secret Garden

There is a rich young CEO who is not really interested in anything other than his business until a poor stuntwoman who is very strong and opinionated and is very passionate about her profession comes along. Things take a hilarious turn when their bodies get switched one day.

 3. Fantasy

First rec: My love from another star

This is one great story. So basically there is an alien who looks damn fine and gets lost on earth for centuries, he basically wanders the earth mostly studying and then there is an popular actress who is so full of herself and gets into a scandal involving her rival actress’s death. Seriously you must see this it is so full of twists and turns, it keeps you on the edge of your chair.

Second rec: Master’s sun

There is a very peculiar woman who can actually see ghosts and talk to them and everyone finds her very strange and repels away from her and then there is a greedy businessman whose life changes after he meets her. This is also very mysterious.

 4. Action

First rec: Vagabond

This is about a stuntman who faces an airplane crash and unearths a nation wide corruption scandal and let me tell you shit goes down. This is the most I can tell you without spoiling it.

Second Rec: Healer

If you’re looking for the perfect mix of action, thriller and romance - Healer is the one to watch. It follows a fighter posing as a night courier, a tabloid journalist and a famous journalist news reporter whose lives all come together as they try to uncover the truth from a broadcasting incident that happened several years back.

5. School

First rec: Boys over flowers

Jan-Di, a  bright and studious girl who gets into a school reserved only for elites eventhough she comes from a very poor background and meets a rich guy in the school and falls in love with him.

Second Rec: School 2013

This is the most realistic depiction of a school I have ever seen. Here is one of the things that touched my heart while I watched this series. It realistically portrayed the relationship between teacher and student. It is truly difficult to work with delinquent students, yet she never gives up on her students. She generally gives great advise to her students who fall into bad situations.

And a bonus one :

My ID is Gangnam Beauty

The story of a woman living a new life through plastic surgery. She meets Do KyungSuk at the college, while everyone thinks that appearance is important, he thinks differently. She will learn what is real “beauty”. I really love this because this really tackles the obsession with the way someone looks.

All of the ones I listed here are full of twists and turns so hang on to your seats.
