Women's Day

Women’s day special

Hey girls and happy women’s day 💟. Today is the day we celebrate every strong woman in our lives. There are empowered women everywhere it may be your mom, your sister , your grandma or even an old flower lady who despite being tired works so much for her and her family. My mom is my biggest inspiration she handles her stressful work-life and home life so well. I hope I will grow up to be like her. This blog is about strong and straight up amazing women who despite having faced obstacles made it in the world of entertainment that shapes many people’s lives. The world we live in today makes just being a woman an obstacle in life , I hope that this changes in the near future. Every woman should be celebrated because they are the one of the strongest creatures in this world. If I begin to talk about every woman that I am inspired by I might end up writing whole damn book so let’s dive into this shall we?

Nina Simone

Nina was a gifted , proud girl . When her mom was at church, Nina unannounced , climbed up the organ bench and learned to play “ God Be with You Till We Meet Again ”. When she was five years old , her mother’s employer offered to pay for piano lessons and Nina started to become a classical pianist. At twelve , she gave her first concert . Her parents were sitting in the front row , but they were forced to move to the back to make room for some white people who came in. Nina refused to start playing until her parents  were seated back at the front.Nina poured her passion and pride into her music and she could not stand racism. She wanted black people to be proud , to be free to embrace their talents and their passions, free of judgement.Eventually she became one of the most famous jazz singers in the world.

“I tell you what freedom is to me . No fear.” – Nina Simone

Alek Wek

Once upon a time , there was a girl named Alek who would stop by a mango tree to get a snack on her way home from school. In Alek’s village , there was no running water nor electricity. She had to walk to a well for drinking water, but she and her family lived a simple and happy life. Then a terrible war broke out and Alek’s life changed forever . As the warning sirens wailed over the village , Alek and her family had to run away from the fighting. They managed to Escape the war and make their way to London. For many decades being a supermodel meant being fair skinned and thin but Alek changed that. Alek looked different than any other model , that she instantly became sensation.

   Sonita Alizadeh

When Sonita was ten years old , her parents told her , “ We have to sell you into marriage.” Sonita did not know what all this meant but she knew she did not want to get married she wanted to study and write songs . But her parents refused to let her study and said they needed the money to buy a bride for her brother. At the last moment war broke out in Afghanistan and she and her brother were sent to a refugee camp in Iran and she went to a school nearby and started writing songs. When she was sixteen years old, her mom came to visit her. She told Sonita that she had to go back to Afghanistan because they found another husband who wanted to buy her. She said no. Sonita loved her mom but she wanted to be a rapper. She wrote a hard hitting song called brides for sale and uploaded it on YouTube. The video went viral and Sonita became famous. She won a scholarship to study music in America.

“In my country, a good girl should be silent, but I want to share the words in my heart.”- Sonita Alizadeh

Priyanka Chopra Jonas

Priyanka Chopra is an icon now but it wasn’t a cake walk for her. When she was young many people told her she would never make it since she had dusky skin. But she had her parents' support all the way and that was the only thing that mattered. When she became Miss World 2000 she received criticism from her own people saying she didn’t deserve the title because she was dark- skinned and that wasn’t considered beautiful. But she didn’t let all this get to her. She worked very hard and made it in the Bollywood industry and then she ventured out into Hollywood and guess what she made it there too. She is literally the face of Indians in the Hollywood.

“All I know is I work damn hard and God helps those who help themselves”- Priyanka Chopra Jonas.

Beyonce

Beyonce was 6 years old when her dad started selling people tickets to go to their house and see her sing and dance. When Beyonce told her mom she wanted to create a band with her friends, her mom said “Okay I’ll make your costumes” and that’s how destiny’schild was born. She was driven, focused and interested in learning as much as possible about every aspect of the music business. She sang about freedom, about love, about independence, and about pain both personal pain and social injustice. She inspired millions of Black women to be proud of their culture, of their origins , of their unique style. Today, she is one of the most influential living pop star in the whole world.

“Okay, ladies now get in formation”- Beyonce

Ellen DeGeneres

One night Ellen dreamt of a bird in a cage. In the dream, the bird realised that there was enough space between the bars to fly away. Ellen knew exactly what the dream meant. She was a comedian and she starred in a popular TV show where she played a woman who loved men , but in real life she loved women. But she couldn’t tell anyone. She didn’t want to hide anymore and she wanted other gay people to see that they were not alone. So in one of the episodes Ellen comes out to her therapist who was played by Oprah Winfrey. It was the first time in history that a lead character on a television program was openly gay. Next Ellen told the media she was gay too. She received huge backlash and her show was eventually cancelled. But light shone again when she received a call from Pixar to play the iconic fish Dory. Today Ellen is a superstar. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her courage and her talk show is watched everyday by millions of people.

“Find out who you are and figure out what you believe in”- Ellen DeGeneres

Madonna

Once in a small town split in half by a river , a star was born . Her name was Madonna. She was smart and got top grades in school but she knew she was a bit different. Madonna knew exactly what she wanted and some people felt intimidated by that but she didn’t let that hold her back. She moved to New York and worked as a singer in clubs and as a waitress in coffee shops. She tried and failed again numerous times. In those days , it was very rare for female artists to be the masters of their own destiny: they would let their male managers, producers, and agents make most of their decisions for them but not Madonna she declared that she was her own work of art. She inspired millions of people with her music. Her huge talent, tremendous self-discipline and fierce determination have made her one of the most influential people in history.

“I have the same goal I’ve had since I was a girl: I want to rule the world”- Madonna

Oprah Winfrey

Once there was a little girl who interviewed crows. She also interviewed her corncob girls. Her name was Oprah and she loved to talk, but her family didn’t listen. Her mother brushed away , saying “ Be quiet I don’t have time for you”. Oprah kept looking for opportunities to speak out. She kept looking for people who would listen to what she had to say. First she joined the public speaking team in her school, then she took a job in Baltimore TV news show as a co-anchor. But deep inside, Oprah wasn’t sure that reporting the news was what she loved. She was fired from the show and given a low rated morning show. She thought her career was over. Instead while interviewing an ice cream seller, she discovered her greatest talent. People started to love the show because she listened to her guests. If they cried , she felt her sadness. If they are angry , she understood their pain. And if they are happy she laughed with them Oprah became the queen of talk shows. She moved on to national television, launched her own network, and became a multi-billionaire and one of the most generous philanthropists .

M.S. Subbulakshmi

Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi is a name that is synonymous with the world of Carnatic music. This flawless singer, whose voice almost had a divine power, is the first singer to be presented with India’s highest civil honour, the Bharat Ratna. When she was honoured with the Ramon Magsaysay award, which is considered as Asia’s Nobel Prize, she became the first Indian musician to do so. Subbulakshmi, fondly addressed as M.S by her fans, was a true pioneer of anything that has to do with women empowerment. She led by example and showed the way to contemporary women of her era. Though she is famous as an exponent of Carnatic music, her expertise in Hindustani classical music was not short of brilliance. Subbulakshmi didn’t contain herself with just music, for she forayed into the field of acting as well.

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is a role model for me. She loved to sing as a young girl and was singing karaoke locally at the age of 10. When she was eleven she sang the National Anthem at a Philadelphia 76ers game. She started learning guitar about that time. It was a computer repairman who taught her a few chords on the guitar when he was at her house helping to fix her parent’s computer. From there Taylor practiced and practiced until she could write songs and play the guitar effortlessly. Taylor also knew she wanted to be a singer/songwriter from the start. At the age of 11 she took a demo tape to Nashville, but was rejected by every record label in town. Taylor didn’t give up, however, she knew what she wanted to do and wasn’t going to take no for an answer. How did Taylor get her first recording contract? Taylor’s parents knew she was talented and moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee so she would be close to Nashville. It took a few years of hard work, but in 2006 Taylor released her first single “Tim McGraw” and a self-title debut album. Both were very successful. The album reached number 1 on the Top Country Albums and was at the top of the charts for 24 out of the next 91 weeks.

Today Taylor Swift is the top female artist and the face of pop music.

That’s it guys I really hope you enjoyed it. So blast singapenney or run the world in your speakers and let’s enjoy this year’s women’s day with pride and dignity and oh! Happy women’s pride month.
